The only reason for stocking up in NY, is because I won't get to go there again for baby clothes, so I might as well buy some now!
In the garment center for children's wear it is a common practice to "dump " the sample line after the season. As a buyer i have seen first hand how these baby garments are touched over and over again I think the quality of cotton offered in finland is wonderful. One of my favorite lines of soft cotton clothing was called Finnwear from finland and we had the all of the top designer lines.
Try to stay away from alot of red clothing as it often runs in the wash. Softer cottons will also shrink alot so I would urge you to think about buying items a bit larger to allow for shrinkage. Items with a more american flare will be the gap,old navy,pottery barn kids,and hip baby tye-dye from little shops in soho or more downtown locations.
Definately look in the better boutiques because they have good sales,do not be scared to enter the "fancy" stores they need sale customers too. I go to NYC at least every other year, and shop loads for my kids. I've been pregnant the last 3 times I've visited. I shop mostly baby stuff at Jersey Garden's and Macy's. Jersey Garden's has Tommy Hilfiger kids, lots of great stuff for babies and children.
Also they have Carter's there which has really cute, cute stuff. I've bought loads of clothing, blankets and bibs. There are also other great children's stores there. For maternity clothes, there is a Motherhood on Madison av and 57th st.
